I know what it feels like to carry the weight of an entire school on your shoulders.
Over the past 25 years, I've served as a teacher, instructional director, assistant principal, principal, and leadership coach. I loved the work, but I also remember the constant pressure of trying to keep every initiative moving, support every teacher, respond to every challenge, and somehow still be the instructional leader my school needed.
For a long time, I thought the answer was to work harder. It wasn't.
What I learned is that even the best leaders struggle when the systems around them aren't working. Too much depends on one person. Priorities compete with each other. Communication breaks down. Teams become overwhelmed. Before long, everyone is working incredibly hard, but it still feels like you're always reacting instead of leading.
